The Art of Democracy:
A Community Poem
Curated and edited by Melissa Joplin Higley, Mamaroneck Poet Laureate
The planet votes in radiant storms, speaks in flowering light.
Our voices, speaking freedom, create a hopeful, vibrant future.
Voting is caring for the nation, caring for yourself.
Won't the process steel itself with each of our generations,
growing hopeful, sowing tenderness—knowing?
Hope soars; hope sings; hope falters; hope survives.
Dandelion puffs, birthday candles, land where the children are safe.
—the hopeful flower, blooming a bright future.
Hang on. Hang on. Hang on!
The time has gone for wishful thinking.
The time has come for courageous speaking.
We are strongest together.
When I vote, I am not selfish!
Please, care—
Tell your story, by any means necessary.
Be yourself, for you are a canvas.
For when the world itself crumbles into red, pointed words.
There is a life...keep building it.
The planet speaks to the light that harbors trees and flowers.
Breathe the fresh air and freedom!
And let the embers of freedom burn with longevity.
My voice shines brighter, yet brighter.
